The Flea Market

I had a dream the other night when everything was still. I dreamed that I was at a yard sale, or swap meet, or flea market. Except that this was much, much bigger than any flea market you’ve ever seen. In fact, it was outside the gates of heaven, and it consisted of all the things from earth that people no longer needed.

Everything that you’ve ever seen at a flea market was there. There was exercise equipment, glassware, old clothing, sports equipment, baby toys, books, tools, and furniture galore. A car enthusiast would have gone crazy over all the Chargers, Mustangs, Corvettes, and other vehicles. Everything was marked down, way down, but there were no takers. Nobody needed any of it anymore.

Furthermore, everything that you’ve NEVER seen at a yard sale was there. The Hope Diamond – the Declaration of Independence – King Arthur’s sword. Every valuable and prized possession from Earth was there. All were on the discount table, and there were no takers.

God’s word doesn’t say anything about a heavenly flea market. It says, in fact, that everything from earth will be destroyed. (2 Peter 3:10) The result is the same – all the things from earth that we work so hard to acquire, all the things that we invest so much of our time and money into, and all the possessions we have will be left behind one day.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6 that our treasure should be in heaven, not on earth.
